Academician M.A. Markov prize was introduced by the Institute for Nuclear Research, RAS in commemoration of Academician M.A. Markov, an outstanding scientist and one of the founders of the Institute. The prize is awarded every year to a research worker of the Institute (or a group of scientists) for a great contribution into fundamental physics and development of investigations in the basic directions of the Institute scientific program.

A decision about awarding the prize is taken by the birthday of Academician M.A. Markov (13 May) by the Scientific Council of the Institute on recommendation of the commission of experts and registered by order of Director of the Institute.

The prize-winner is presented a special diploma.

Research workers are nominated the prize either individually or as a group (but not more than three persons). They can work at the Institute or in other Russian or foreign scientific centers. The right to nominate candidates for consideration by the commission of experts belongs to RAS members as well as to Scientific Councils or Scientific-Technical Councils of the departments of the Institute.

Candidate's recommendation papers are submitted to the commission of experts with a description of his specific contribution into fundamental physics and development of investigations in the basic directions of the Institute scientific program.

The period of submission of recommendation papers to the commission of experts is annually from the 1st of January to the 1st of March inclusive. The complement of commission of experts is confirmed by order of Director of the Institute. The members of the commission of experts nominated as candidates for the prize can refuse to work in the commission.

The amount of the prize is determined every year with consideration for existing amounts of inscribed prizes of RAS.

Markov readings are the international seminar held in commemoration of Academician M.A. Markov, an outstanding scientist of Russia, great physicist-theorist and organizer of science who made a pioneer contribution into the development of neutrino investigations, studies of fundamental problems of elementary particle physics and quantum gravitation on the boundary of particle physics and cosmology, Academician-secretary of Nuclear Physics Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1967-1988) who played a great role in our country's nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics and neutrino astrophysics.

It is annually organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The first Markov readings were arranged for the 95th anniversary of Academician M.A. Markov (13-14 May, 2003).

The programme includes the reports of the winners of Markov prize which was introduced by the Institute for Nuclear Research, RAS and awarded every year for remarkable contribution into elementary particle physics, fundamental nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics, neutrino astrophysics and studies in the field of interaction of particle physics and cosmology.

To participation in Markov readings students and post graduates are widely drawn from basic chairs of the Moscow State University, MIPT and other higher institutions of the country, young scientific workers who study and have their practice on the basis of the Scientific-and-Educational Center of INR RAS, in LPI and JINR.

Proceedings of the seminar are annually published and located in the INR internet site.
